Treatment products can be separated into two categories – chemical and natural. While here at NitWits we always recommend products that are free of traditional pesticides it is most certainly up to the individual as to the treatment preference.
Chemical products are generally based on malathion and / or synthetic pyrethrins. Studies conducted around products using these ingredients have shown a huge decline in success. Head lice are becoming resistant to these products, which means the effectiveness of these products is reduced. A study in Brisbane actually showed a drop from 90% to 60% in the success rate of these products.
Chemical products can be potentially harmful if not used correctly, especially to children, babies and pregnant mothers. It is important when using these types of treatments to follow the instructions carefully.
Natural based products are based on natural oils and extracts such as eucalyptus, tea tree, orange and lavender. High levels of some oils or the addition of alcohol can cause some irritation for very sensitive skin; it's a good idea to speak to the Pharmacist in the case
With both chemical and natural products the louse targeted. The nits (head lice eggs) are not and continue to grow even after treatment. These must be removed for the hair to ensure complete eradication of head lice and put an end to the head lice life cycle.
